This bold statement ring is made from 14kt gold, and depicts a so-called lucky nail, that coils around your finger.
The lucky nail is derived from the nails used to hammer down a horseshoe, and they are therefore a form of equestrian jewellery. Equestrian jewels with either horse shoes, shoe nails or a combination of these symbols were worn quite often in the late 19th and early 20th Century. These jewels were not only a beautiful fashion statement, but also served as lucky tokens.
The horseshoe and horseshoe nails are in fact both ancient symbols for good luck, going as far back as Roman times. The origin of the horseshoe as a symbol of luck is linked to several myths and legends: the hoofed devil was said to have donned horseshoes and was told never to enter a home with a horseshoe above the door.
Witches were believed to fear horses, so hanging a horseshoe warded them off. Over time, these symbols turned into internationally recognized lucky charms. The lucky nail was especially popular during the 1st half of the 20th Century.
