This 19th Century wax seal wheel is not only practical but also an impressive little artwork to exhibit on one's desk! In the 19th Century, letters were often sealed with hot wax. Most avid letter writers would have their own seal, for instance bearing their initials. This wheel is interesting because it provides its owner with 7 different seals, all with their own appropriate motto, to choose from.
The seals are made from brass, and the wheel is fitted with a porcelain handle. The handle has been stamped with a maker's mark that can only partially be read anymore: 'Co''''N Paris'.
The seals depict the following images and motto's:
Two entwined hearts with the motto 'For Ever'.
A sailing ship at sea with the motto 'Such is Life'.
Two shaking hands with the motto 'Friendship'.
A riding locomotive with the motto 'Quick'.
A heart in a hand palm with the motto 'Love Truth'.
A walking dog with the motto 'Faithful'.
A crowing rooster with the motto 'While I live I'll Crow'.
