Vulcanite is a type of hardened rubber created through the vulcanization process, developed by Charles Goodyear in the 1830s. Natural rubber was treated with sulfur and heat, producing a durable, moldable material that could be polished to a high shine. In jewellery, it was often dyed deep black or dark brown, making it an appealing alternative to more costly materials like jet.
