This travel diamond scale was used by a diamond merchant in the early 19th Century. It was made by W & T Avery, a scale company that was founded in 1818 in Birmingham.
The lid contains a table that helps calculate carat weights. The set also has eight tiny weights, ranging from 1 to 64 carats. On the outside, you find a handy pair of tweezers, made from brass.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: 14 x 6.5 x 3 cm.
Age: Eary 19th Century, circa 1830s.
Condition: In good antique condition with only minor wear, consistent with its age. The strings of the scales were likely replaced at some time in the past. All contents are still present, with the scales displaying some rust. The pair of tweezers on the outside was jammed in too hard in the past, which has caused the opening at the bottom where it is housed to crack: this can be seen in the pictures.
