The design of this ring, with a marquise-shaped front setting, is also known as a navette style (which translates to 'little boat' in French). This shape optically elongates the finger, thereby looking gorgeous on any hand. Navette rings were very popular during the last years of the 19th Century, the period we now call the Victorian era.
This particular example is made from 14k yellow gold. The front is set with twentyone old mine-cut diamonds, with a combined estimated weight of 1.05 carats, with an estimated colour and clarity of I-J, pique.
All diamonds have been placed in open, silver settings, allowing light to pass through the stones. Traditionally, diamonds were set in silver to enhance their colour and brilliance, while the gold shank prevented the silver from tarnishing and staining skin or clothing.
