This large flower-shaped brooch is studded with numerous rose-cut diamonds of various shapes and sizes. All diamonds are placed in closed, silver settings, which was traditionally done to enhance their color and brilliance. The back and pin are made from 18k gold, since silver could tarnish and potentially stain skin or clothing.
Flower motifs were abundant in the 19th Century, when they were often gifted and worn not only for their beauty, but also their symbolic meaning. Therefore, gifting bejewelled flowers was a popular occurrence, making floral jewels a highly recognizable and collectable part of 19th Century jewellery history.
