This opaline glass box comes in a fitted, leather lined case. It was likely bought as a souvenir in Vatican city (maybe to hold a rosary?) in the 19th Century, since the front is decorated with a shell cameo depicting Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) who was the head of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878, the longest reigning pope in history. Since this portrait shows him at a relatively young age, it is likely that it was made at the beginning of his reign.
