This 22k yellow gold ring was made in the 19th Century, but its design is based on a Renaissance design. Around the 1860s, neo-renaissance jewelry - also known as Holbeinesque - was very popular, with Renaissance jewellery design books used as a source of inspiration.
It is centered by an old mine-cut diamond, set in a claw setting, with an estimated weight of 0.30 carats. Its colour is estimated at H-I, and it has an internal inclusion that comes to the surface of the table, making its clarity pique. You can see this inclusion in the picture.
From the early 18th century to the late 19th century, the old-mine cut was one of the most common diamond cuts used in jewellery. You can recognize an old-mine cut diamond by its squarish shape: it has up to 58 facets like today’s modern round brilliant-cut diamond, but that’s where the similarity ends. In addition to a different shape, an old mine cut has different proportions: it typically has a smaller table, larger culet and higher crown. It also has short lower-half facets and a girdle that is very thin in places. As a result, an old mine-cut diamond has a very distinctive look and a very unique character.
