In the 19th Century, letter padlocks were a novelty trend. Instead of having a number combination, you could order a lock spelling out a favourite word or even a name.
This lock will only open when you turn it to read 'Jean', a popular French name at the time. If this Jean was the owner of the lock, or maybe someone close to their heart, we will never know for sure, but the fact that this name was used to keep valuable items safe is a very romantic idea.
