This cross-shaped pendant will be sold in the box I found in it! It is made from horn and decorated with gold inlay, in a technique known as piqué.
This form of decoration was used for small luxury items such as snuff boxes and jewellery from the 18th Century onwards. Piqué was traditionally a French specialty. By the 1760s, the technique had spread to England, where it was mass-produced by Birmingham manufacturers from the 1870s onwards.
