This 19th Century watch chain would have originally been worn to carry a pocket watch and is therefore fitted with a swivel clasp. It is shaped like a snake, with a head that looks more like a dolphin or sea monster to our modern eye, which is typical for the depiction of snakes in 19th Century jewellery. The body of the snake is made up of ascending scale-like links.
You could wear this chain as a necklace, paired with a chain extender or large charm holder, or wear it doubled up as a bracelet.
