This unique bracelet was likely bought as a safari souvenir in the late 19th Century. It is intricately made from elephant hair and a gold plated metal.
The mighty elephant proved a fascinating animal for Victorian travelers from the West, who would often bring all sorts of souvenirs reminding them of their travels. The hairs of elephants would be gathered and woven into intricate jewellery, and although rings can be found quite regularly, bracelets like these are rare. The trade in antique ivory has been almost completely forbidden, but since the hairs of elephants can be found and do not require to have the animal killed, it is legal to buy and sell elephant hair jewellery.
