This impressive flower brooch is realistically rendered, with each petal and stamen executed with attention to detail. Its design is typical for the second half of the 19th Century, when jewelers created designs that tried to emulate nature as closely as possible.

Each petal is set with an array of old mine-cut diamonds of different shapes and sizes, and each stamina is studded with a tiny rose-cut diamond. It is clear that this flower was meant to dazzle, because the frame leaves little room for the silver settings and gives emphasis to the large number of diamonds. Its design is completed by a round, cream-coloured pearl in the heart of the flower.

All old mine-cut diamonds have been placed in open settings, allowing light to pass through the stones. All diamonds combined have an estimated weight of 5.25 carats.

The is made from 14kt yellow gold, with a silver front. Traditionally, this was done because silver brings out the sparkle and colour of the diamonds, while the gold backing would prevent the silver from tarnishing and potentially staining skin or clothing.

Originally, the flower was part of a larger jewel, likely a tiara, and could be worn both attached to this larger piece, or separately as this brooch. A tiny pin at the back shows where it would have been fitted in a larger frame, and the back shows that the brooch fitting can be removed. If desired, my jeweler could create an extra frame for you, so you would be able to wear it as a pendant: feel free to reach out for a quotation of the costs.
