This coromandel dressing case accompanied a wealthy Victorian lady or gentleman on their travels, keeping their precious jewellery and perfumes safely locked away. It was made to order by the company

Leuchars and Son, one of the most renowned dress box makers of their era, and bears the initials CW (or WC) on the lid. The exterior is decorated with brass detailing and handles, while the interior is lined with blue silk.

Inside, the lid hides a compartment to store away letters and papers. The inside has room for several perfume bottles, and has a removable jewellery tray. The original bottles are unfortunately missing, but a tiny dotted pattern on the velvet tells us that these bottles were made from faceted crystal. Now, these compartments are very suitable to store separate jewellery boxes.

The bottom of the box has another jewellery drawer, which can be locked seperately.
The lid and the drawer are both fitted with the same patented Bramah lock, which come with their original key. These locks were renowned and deemed unpickable in the 19th Century, and are still considered technical masterpieces. I would therefore advise you to store the key away safely, because picking it is still a difficult chore compared to most antique boxes that I have sold!

James Leuchars started his business as a perfumer wigsmaker in London in 1793. The company evolved in also making travel items, silver and golden instruments, and travel boxes. Their high-quality products were popular among the upper classes of Europe and in 1837, the firm was awarded the Royal Warrant for their supply of dressing cases to the royal family. Leuchars carried on as a family business throughout the 19th century, until they were bought by Aspreys in 1888. However, they continued to trade under their name at 38 & 39 Piccadilly until 1902.

The lock bears the engraving 'Leuchars Patent, Piccadilly London', and inside the lid, a gilt inscription reads 'Leuchars &Son, 38 & 39 Piccadilly, London & Rue De La Paix, Paris'. This helps us date the box to have been made around 1870.
