This 19th-century oil painting shows a white Chihuahua, standing on a plush red velvet armchair. A coat hangs on one of the arms, potentially signaling that this little pup will be taken out on a walk soon!
The Chihuahua is originally a Mexican breed of dog, which has been mentioned in records as early as the 16th Century. Over time, the breed has undergone some physical changes. Although the painting is unsigned, both the painting style and the physical characteristics of the dog point to it being painted in the second half of the 19h Century.

Dimensions: 28 x 33 cm (frame size), 19,5 x 25 cm (board size).
Age: 19th Century.
Material: Oil paint on wood, fitted in a wooden frame.
Condition: In good antique condition with minor signs of wear, consistent with its age. The painting is in good condition. The frame has some scuffs and paint chips missing: this could easily be restored but for now, I have left it as is because in my opinion, this adds to the overall charm.
