This hilarious novelty brooch is the perfect little conversation starter! It depicts a silver dog and cat playing on a golden seesaw. The dog on the right has clearly just jumped on with a bit too much enthusiasm, which the cat does not appreciate, based on her raised tail and curved back! Both animals are set with several rose-cut diamonds and tiny rubies for eyes. The brooch is fitted with a c-clasp and a long brooch pin, a feature very typical in 19th Century jewellery.
Novelty brooches like these, displaying the interests or hobbies of their owner, or just creating a cute little scene like in this brooch, were very popular at the end of the 19th Century.
