These 18k yellow gold French earrings have a crescent-moon base, decorated with pansie flowers and spherical fringes.

The pansy flower was used often in Victorian jewellery because of its romantic symbolism. The word 'pansy' comes from the French word ' pensée', which means 'to think of'.  Therefore, gifting someone a jewel decorated with pansies would indicate that they were on your mind.

After the 1840s, jewelry became more widely available for more classes, not just the upper class. At the same time, the price of gold soared. This created a range of jewellery in non-precious materials, but also gold jewels that were made with a relatively low amount of gold. These earrings are hollow and therefore wafer-thin. This makes them very comfortable to wear, but it has also caused some dents during the 150 years they have been worn and used.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: 42 x 13 mm, measured from hook to tip.

Weight: combined 2.77 grams.

Age: 19th Century, Victorian era, circa 1860s.

Material: Each hook has French hallmarks for 18k gold.

Condition: These earrings are in antique condition, with some wear, consistent with their age. The enamel has been damaged on one earring, which can be seen on the left in the pictures. There are several little dents in both earrings, which luckily are not very noticeable when worn. I believe that the hooks were replaced in the past.
