This desk seal combined both a functional and beautiful function and would have been an interesting 'objet d'art' on a Victorian desk.
It is made from a polished agate rod, which is terminated by a gilded silver stopper on each side. One side has been engraved with the monogram 'ED' or 'DE', depending on your preference.
The desk seal is still preserved in its original, fitted box, which is stamped with the logo of the French branch of Mappin & Webb, housed on the Rue de la Paix in Paris in the early 20th Century, on the inside.
