This early 19th Century half hoop rose-cut diamond ring is made from 18k yellow gold with a silver front. It was sized down in the past, which makes the diamond-encrusted front circle around two-thirds of the band, creating almost the effect of an eternity ring when you wear it. It is set with nine rose-cut diamonds, which is quite rare, since most similar rings are set with either five or seven stones. Traditionally, diamonds were set in silver settings to optically enhance their colour and brilliance, while the backs and shanks were made in gold, to prevent the silver from tarnishing and staining your skin.
The largest diamond measures 6 x 5 mm and weighs an estimated 0.48 carats. All diamonds have a high dome and good colour, with some inclusions that can be observed through a loupe, but no unsightly inclusions that can be spotted with the naked eye. Combined, the diamonds have an estimated weight of 1.22 carats.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: US 7.25 / UK O / Circumference 55 mm.
This ring was sized down extensively at some point, and I would not recommend sizing it down any further. It could however be sized up moderately if desired.
Weight: 3.43 grams.
Age: 19th Century, also known as the Victorian Era, circa 1800s.
Material and hallmarks: The ring carries no hallmarks but has been acid tested as being 18k gold and silver.
Condition: The ring is in good antique condition with only minor wear, consistent with its age. There is a resizing mark at the back of the ring shank. The foils behind the diamonds have gotten patina over time, which gives them a greyish appearance.
