This substantial marquise ring is set with a blue glass panel, encircled by a row of small rose-cut diamonds. The blue plaque has a silver applique of a flower vase, encrusted with rose-cut diamonds. The ring shank is forked and decorated with foliage patterns.
Although this ring was made around 1900, its design is inspired by 18th century examples. Marquise ring designs with flower baskets, known as ‘Giardinetti’, were first developed during the reign of French king Louis XVI in the last half of the 18th century.
The settings of these rings were often large, generally oval or a long emerald-shaped rectangle that curved to fit the finger perfectly. Most often they were made from a royal blue glass plaque or decorated with royal blue enamel, which gives these rings almost a regal feel.
