This 18k yellow gold 'Tank ring' is centered by three antique-cut diamonds, two rows of rose-cut diamonds, and two rows of square-cut synthetic rubies.
Tank rings as we know them today emerged in the early 20th century. The design is thought to have been inspired by the artillery and machinery of the time, particularly the tanks used in World War I and World War II. The shapes and elements of military vehicles, like the circular, often angular and sturdy features, influenced many designers, particularly during the Art Deco and Retro era.
This particular design is typical for the 1940s and early 1950s. Even though Europe was at war during this era, jewellery was still created. The combination of antique-style diamonds -likely from an old piece of jewellery- and the synthetic rubies in this ring commemorates that in this period, it was difficult to obtain gemstones, and these were therefore often either recycled or the synthetic alternative was used.
