----------
These silver earrings are Spanish in origin and are set with numerous rose-cut diamonds in closed settings. The hooks and back are made from 18k gold. Traditionally, this was done because silver brings out the brilliance of the diamonds, while the gold elements were added because silver can tarnish and stain skin or clothing.
These are so-called 'Day to Night' earrings, which means that the drop pendant below can easily be removed. The top earrings - each set with one rose-cut diamond - can be worn solo when you prefer a more casual look and the drops can be added to create a pair of stunning drop earrings.
These earrings are fashioned in the way that was typical for the early 19th Century, with a tension hook that fastens in the front, which you will have to thread through your lobe from the back to the front. This way of fastening does need some time to get adjusted to by practicing it in the mirror (at least in my experience!) but it is a surprisingly comfortable way of wearing earrings once you get used to it.
A similar pair of earrings can be found in the collection of the Victorian Albert Museum in London, accession number 1253&A-1871.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: Total length from the top of the hook till the tip: 50 mm / 2 inches.
Weight: Total weight 11.68 grams.
Age: Late 18th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1780s.
Material: The earrings have been acid tested as being silver and 18k gold. They also have a makers mark which I was not able to identify.
Condition: These earrings are in okay antique condition with signs of wear and repairs. The tops are still sturdy but the jump rings of the bottom parts were replaced in the past. This makes these elements - like most antique pieces - not suitable to wear 24/7.
