Thank you!

——-

This marquise-shaped mourning ring was created as a loving tribute. I have seen a lot of mourning rings from this time period over the years, but this particular floral design is new to me, and I was not able to find a similar jewel in my extensive research.

In the 18th Century, it was not unusual to have mourning rings created after someone's passing. A will would sometimes specify that these rings should be made from the proceeds, and would specify to which relatives and friends they would be gifted.

The enameled border reads: Rob(er)t Green, Ob 13 Jan 1786 Ae 31. The white enamel border in which these letters are set tells us that Robert was unmarried at the time of his passing.

Uniquely, inside the glass panel sit two enameled flowers: a red rose and a blue forget-me-not on a yellow background. In the 18th Century, red roses were used as a symbol of love and devotion, while the forget-me-not is a flower used for remembrance, giving these flowers a poignant symbolic meaning.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: US 6.5, UK M 1/2, circumference 53 mm.
The octagonal panel measures 30 x 16 mm.
This ring cannot be sized.

Weight: 5.50 grams.

Age: Late 18th Century, circa 1780s.

Material: Acid tested as 9k gold.
