This 18k yellow gold stickpin was originally worn in a man's cravat, the predecessor of the necktie. It depicts a delicate, platinum hind, or female deer, her body encrusted with tiny rose-cut diamonds, and one eye set with a tiny ruby. Although the back is not set with diamonds, it is nevertheless beautifully executed, adding to the sculptural quality of this piece.
White deer can be found occasionally in nature, their colour caused by a rare genetic pattern known as leucism. The white dear has played a prominent role in the mythology of many Western cultures. For instance, the legend of King Arthur features a white dear that has a perennial ability to evade capture, and the pursuit of the animal in this story is seen to represent mankind's spiritual quest.
This stickpin could be converted into a pendant for a small extra fee if desired: feel free to reach out via the contact form if you would like to discuss this option.
