This gorgeous 14k yellow gold solitaire ring is set with an antique old mine-cut diamond, which was likely cut in the 19th Century, and reset in this vintage ring shank. Its highly raised prong setting makes this ring very suitable to combine with another ring band, and for instance wear it as a wedding set.
The old mine-cut diamond has an estimated weight of 1.25 carats, with a warm colour (L-M) and SI2 clarity.
From the early 18th century to the late 19th century, the old-mine cut was one of the most common diamond cuts used in jewellery. It has up to 58 facets like today’s modern round brilliant cut diamond, but that’s where the similarity ends.
In addition to a different shape, an old mine cut has different proportions: it typically has a smaller table, larger culet, and higher crown. It also has short lower-half facets and a girdle that is very thin in places. As a result, an old mine-cut diamond has a very distinctive look and a very unique character.
