These so-called 'Day to Night' earrings have a drop pendant that can easily be removed. The top hook earrings, made from jet, can be worn solo when you prefer a more casual look, and the onyx drops can be added to create a more formal pair.
They are a so-called 'marriage', since the jet tops and onyx drops were originally likely each part of a different pair of earrings. The shape and design of these earrings are very typical of the early 19th Century, and it is clear that each original pair would have exactly this size and shape, so this set ended up very well matched.
The hook earrings are fashioned in a way that was typical for the early 19th Century, with a tension hook that fastens in the front, which threads through your lobe from the back to the front. This way of fastening does need some time to get adjusted to by practicing it in the mirror (at least in my experience!) but it is a surprisingly comfortable way of wearing earrings.
