Gold chains were a very popular accessory in the Regency period (1811 - 1820). Because the price of gold was very high during this period, but labor costs were relatively low, these handmade necklaces are always very intricately made, yet surprisingly light compared to modern examples, and were often completed with elaborate and finely made clasps.
This beautiful yellow chain, with its alternating links, growing larger towards the center of the necklace and tapering down toward the clasp, is a very typical example of this period. The barrel-shaped box clasped is made from yellow gold and decorated with rose and green gold flowers and petals, another trend of the Georgian era.
