These elaborate  18th Century paste earrings must have been the center of the party when they were originally worn!

The design of these large earrings are known as a 'Giardinetti', which means tiny garden in Italian. It is a remnant of a major trend in jewellery in the second half of the 18th Century when ladies and gentlemen would gift each other tiny flower jewellery as a token of friendship and devotion. This trend is believed to have been brought to Paris by Venetian goldsmiths, hence the Italian name.

The term 'paste' is now generally used for a specific type of faceted glass gemstones that was developed by George Friedrich Strass in the 1720s. Glass material has been used in jewellery since glass was invented millennia ago, but Strass experimented with the lead content of the glass and was able to create a recipe that would give material that, when faceted, would have a brilliance that replicated diamonds. This not only gave ladies a more affordable option to diamond jewellery, but it also allowed jewellery designers the chance to create outspoken, elaborate designs that were more difficult to make with natural diamonds, as can be seen in this pair, which is set with a differs array of paste stones of different shapes and sizes.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: 56 x 30 mm from hook to tip.

Weight: combined 18.72 grams

Age: 18th Century, also known as the Georgian era, Circa 1760s.

Material: Acid tested as being silver, with 9k yellow gold fisher hooks.

Condition: In antique condition with wear and repairs, consistent with their age. Two paste stones are missing. The back of the right earring on the pictures displays a repair mark, and it is clear that the soldering of this repair caused the settings of several of the paste stones to turn brown. I have included a pictures of each of the earrings worn, so you can see how the difference in colours looks when you wear them.
