This 18kt yellow gold locket is shaped like a shield and fitted with two glass panels. The two separate panels are held together at the bottom by a tiny lock and key. Pendants like these were popular in the late 18th Century to 'lock away' and carry around a memento of a loved one, for instance a little miniature painting, a lock of hair of a piece of cloth.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: The shield measures 33 x 27 mm.
Weight: 7.75 grams.
Age: Late 18th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1780s.
Hallmarks: There are several hallmarks at the jump ring which cannot be read anymore: it has been acid tested as 18kt gold.
Condition: In antique condition with some wear, consistent with its age. The lock displays some dents from where people have tried to unlock it in the past, but the little key is actually a decorative one and will not help you open it! It is however easy to open and close once you know how: I will gladly send a little construction video upon purchase.
