This ring was originally worn as a reminder of a deceased loved one. The front displays an oval glass panel, with behind it the monogram 'CS' fitted inside a laurel wreath, which is completely made from hair. 

On the outside of the shank, outlined in black enamel, the following inscription can be read: 

 - Chare (Charles) Squire - ob 12 Apr 1771 - aet 49 - 

In the 18th Century, it was customary for the nobility to reserve money in their will for the creation of mourning rings for direct family members and friends. It is therefore highly likely that this ring was created according to his specified wishes after his passing. 

GENERAL INFORMATION 

Size: US 6, UK L 1/2, circumference 52 mm. 
The oval frame measures 14x12 mm. 
This ring cannot be sized. 

Weight: 3.76 grams.

Age: 18th Century, circa 1770s. 

Material: Hallmarked for 14k gold. 

Condition: In good antique condition with only minor wear, consistent with its age. There is a small dent on the back of the oval panel. The black enamel behind the lettering on the shank has some wear, which can be seen in the pictures, but the lettering is still clearly legible.
