This rare 18k yellow gold ring is decorated all around the shank with a foliage pattern in black, white, blue, and red enamel. These motifs symbolize opulence and fecundity, which signify that the ring was worn as either an engagement or wedding ring.
The inside of the shank cleverly hides a compartment, which would have been used to carry a little memento inside. It is likely that this compartment contained a locket of hair of the lover of the wearer.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Size: US 6.5, UK M 1/2, circumference 53.5 mm.
The band is 7 mm wide.
This ring cannot be sized.
Weight: 3.00 grams
Age: 19th Century, also known as the Georgian era, circa 1830s.
Material: Hallmarked with a French rooster head hallmark, used for 18k gold in Paris between 1819 and 1838.
Condition: In good antique condition with only minor signs of wear, consistent with age. There are a few tiny damages to the enamel, which can be seen in the pictures. I consider these part of its history and have decided to offer the ring in its current condition, however, I do work with a great enamel restorer who could easily bring it back to its original condition. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss this option.
