This rare and unique set consists of a cross pendant and earrings, in their original box.
Some of the oldest regional French jewelry originated in the Normandy region in the mid-18th century, and quickly evolved into many and distinct forms. In the late 18th Century, Normandy ladies would wear crosses with a large hart at the top, worn on a black velvet ribbon. The Norman 'bosses crosse' -which translates to embossed crosses- were made in both gold and gilded silver. They are always hollow and decorated on two sides with diamond-like faceting. The three large holes at the back of the crosses allow the black velvet ribbons to be threaded through easily. As with many large crosses, the lower part was hinged to allow more movement.
The style was originally popular between 1750 and 1820, but found a revival around 1872, when the International Exhibition in London created a renewed interest in local jewelry traditions. This set matches a similar set that can be found in the Musée des Arts et Traditions Normands, which makes me certain that this set is from the second half of the 19th Century.

Condition: This set is in good antique condition with some wear, consistent with their age. The gilding has gently rubbed off over the centuries, which gives the individual items a unique patina.
