This 18k rosegold and silver ring is set with five table-cut diamonds, all placed in closed, silver settings. I suspect that this setting and its diamonds were created in the 18th Century, and that the destinctive rose gold shank was added at a later date, based on its design likely somewhere in the 1930s.

Traditionally, diamonds were set in silver settings to optically enhance their colour and brilliance, while the backs and shanks were made in gold, to prevent the silver from tarnishing and staining your skin. In the past, the originally closed settings have been opened-up, making the ring a little easier to wear and clean.

The table-cut is a very interesting cut in jewellery history, since it is one of the earliest faceting styles ever created.  It refers to a point cut with the top of the pyramid removed, creating a flat surface. This new shape created the first diamond that intentionally returned light to the viewer’s eye. The table-cut diamond, considered the first true diamond cut, was developed in the 15th Century, emerging from the earlier point-cut. It was designed by polishing down the top and bottom of a natural octahedral diamond crystal to create a flat, square table.

The diamonds have an estimated weight of (from left to right) 0.18, 0.25, 0.35, 0.24, and 0.12 carats, making the combined total estimated weight circa 1.14 carats. The foils behind these diamonds make them look greyish and a bit cloudy: it also makes it difficult for me to appraise their true colour and clarity. If you prefer a cleaner look, you could opt to have the backs of each setting opened - feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss this option.
