This incredible ring is set with a 19th Century shell cameo, depicting a faun. A faun is a half-human, half-goat mythological creature. a prominent feature in Greek and Roman mythology. He is easily recognized by his pointy ears.
These mythological creatures borrowed their appearance from the god Pan of the Greek pantheon. Fauns were symbols of peace and fertility. Romans told tales of Fauns frightening lonely travelers, although it was also believed that they were capable of guiding people in need, since they roamed in remote and undiscovered places, being creatures that lived in the wild amongst other mythical animals.
The cameo was expertly reset by a Roman jeweler in a 10k yellow gold mount. The mount really creates an extra level of interest to the ring, because it is it shaped like a dome, tilting the cameo upwards when worn and yet counterbalancing its shape, which makes this an absolute statement ring.
Size: Hits the mandrel at a US 7 / circumference 54 mm, but can be worn up to a size 8 / 57 mm due to the open back of the settings, which creates a little extra room.
The front setting measures 25 x 21 mm.

Age: The cameo was carved in the early 19th Century, circa 1840s. The ring mount is contemporary.
