This yellow gold crossover brooch is decorated with filigree, a technique that creates intricate patterns that are built up from gold thread and beads. Each end of the brooch is terminated by a lapis lazuli sphere.
The design of this brooch, and the techniques used, are clearly based on ancient Etruscan jewellery. In the second half of the 19th Century, the discovery of several Etruscan graves containing elaborate jewellery, made from high-carat gold caused a craze for jewellery that was inspired by these ancient pieces.
