This egg-shaped locket is made by two high domed, cabochon-cut heliotrope gemstones, which are set in a 18kt mounting. The inside reveals a small glass window, where you can store the picture of a loved one.
The mineral heliotrope is also often called 'bloodstone', due to the tiny red specks of hematite that freckle this dark green jasper gemstone. Heliotrope has been worn in jewellery for millennia, and through the centuries, its unique speckled appearance made man believe it had magical properties.
The Roman write Pliny the Elder (1st century) mentioned first that the magicians used it as a stone of invisibility. The ancient Greeks and Romans wore the stone to bring renown and favor, to bring endurance, and as a charm against the bite of venomous creatures. Greek and Roman athletes favored it as a talisman for success in their games. A few centuries later, Christians that the red spots come from blood falling upon the stone during the crucifixion of Jesus, as he was stabbed in the side by a Roman soldier.
