This 14k yellow gold necklace is inspired by popular ouroboros necklaces from the 19th Century. The wheat-link chain is fitted with a clasp that is shaped like the head of a snake, which is decorated with blue enamel, an old-cut pear-shaped diamond of circa 0.50 carats, and two small cabochon rubies in its eyes. The open mouth of the snake holds the box clasp, and the neck is fitted with an extra safety chain, to ensure it will not slip off unnoticed when worn.
The Ouroboros symbol of a snake biting its own tale has been known for millennia and was first used in ancient Chinese mythology. Similar symbolism is also found in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, where it symbolized the circle of life, death, and rebirth. Through the centuries, the symbol has kept its significance in Western iconography.
Snakes have been revered as spiritual animals in many cultures, and they were also a popular animals to depict in 19th Century jewellery. Jewellery from this period was often inspired by the ouroboros and the symbolism of snakes in general.

Age: I believe this necklace to be mid-20th Century, circa 1960s, inspired by a Victorian era design, with the possibility of it being older.
Material: Acid tested as 14k gold.
Condition: This necklace is in good vintage condition with only minor wear, consistent with its age. There was an extra little safety pin added in the neck of the snake, where it meets the chain, to make sure it stays secure when worn.
