This Art Deco rings design is very typical for the period. It is beautifully made, with intricately cut out detailing and a lovely colour combination.
The centre of this ring is set with a natural, emerald-cut emerald that weighs an estimated 0.35 carats. The ring is further set with several single-cut diamonds and is accentuated with a row of onyx gemstones, which have been faceted to align perfectly next to each other.
All gemstones are set in open settings, which allows light to pass through the stones, and which are decorated with so-called 'millegrain'. This effect is made with a small tool that creates the look of a fine strand of grains of sand (hence the French name, which translates to 'a thousand grains'). The ring shank is further decorated with a geometrical pattern.
The geometrical shape of this ring and the use of platinum combined with black, white and green gemstones are very typical for the Art Deco era. This period was prompted by the Paris Exhibition of 1925 and thrived during the 1920s and 1930s. Jewellery designs moved away from the elaborate floral designs of the Belle époque and began to incorporate geometric patterns after the Cubist movement and the new aesthetics of abstract artists.
