The 'fede' symbol of two clasping hands originates from ancient Rome, where the phrase 'mani in fede' or 'hands clasped in trust' was used to conclude a form of agreement, including marriage and business deals.
It remained a popular motif in Medieval Europe, where its meaning more strongly emphasized a romantic bond. Over time, fede rings were therefore mostly gifted as a bethrothal or wedding gift.
The ring is made from silver, but was originally gilded, and traces of this can still be seen. I am very tentative in dating this ring, because this design was used so widely. A similar ring in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (accession number 846-1871) is dated at 1350-1400, so this ring could have been created in the late Medieval period. However, rings like these were very popular up till the 19th Century and can still be purchased today.
