This stickpin was originally worn in a gentleman's cravat, the predecessor of the modern necktie. It is made of 18k gold and topped with a silver origami bird, known in French as a 'cocotte'.

The term 'cocotte' was originally used as a term of endearment for children, but from the 1860s onwards, it was also used as a term for high-class prostitutes. Over time, the term became a general French term of endearment, similar to calling someone a dear or sweetheart. It is therefore highly likely that this pin was given and proudly worn as a term of endearment.
