This romantic heart-shaped locket pendant is made up from two glass panels, that reveal the contents from both sides. The front is decorated with a gold frame that displays a hairwork in the shape of a pansy flower, which in French can be read as a little rebus that reads 'think of me' (pense à moi). From the top dangles a decorative key on a chain, which signifies that this heart is locked for someone special!
In the 19th century, before the invention of photography and telephones, carrying around a literal piece of a loved one had a very significant meaning. Therefore, jewels that contained a piece of hair were very popular. A lot of jewelers specialized in creating designs from hair, and popular ladies' magazines even gave descriptions on how these works of art could be created at home. Based on its design, it is very likely that this pendant was worn as a symbol of love, maybe gifted to celebrate an engagement or wedding.
