This urn-shaped pendant is made from a combination of yellow gold, rose gold, and silver. The top opens and originally likely held a tiny sponge, doused in perfume. Little perfume containers like these, also known as vinaigrettes, were worn by ladies to protect them against the nasty smells of Georgian life, and these were often not only practical, but also beautifully executed.
To our modern eye, an urn feels connected to death and mourning, and urns were indeed often used in mourning jewels. However, in the 18th Century the urn was also a highly popular symbol of neoclassicism. This tiny usable urn is therefore most likely a highly fashionable way of showing one's love for classical art, rather than a mourning piece.
Currently, this pendant is being offered without a necklace: feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss adding one to your order.
