This urn-shaped pendant was originally worn as a watch fob and hung on a gentleman's watch chain as a form of counterbalance. The bottom is set with a carnelian intaglio depicting a classical figure, which could be used to seal off a personal letter with hot wax.

To our modern eye, an urn feels connected to death and mourning, and urns were indeed often used in mourning jewels. However, in the 18th century, the urn was also a highly popular symbol of neoclassicism. This tiny usable urn is therefore most likely a highly fashionable way of showing one's love for classical art, rather than a mourning piece.

Currently, this pendant is being offered without a necklace: feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss adding one to your order.
