This elegant ring is made from 12k yellow gold, and set with fourteen natural, table-cut rubies, and a rose-cut ruby in the center.

These rings are called 'A Fiocco' in Italian, because the setting resembles a bow shape. The first bow-shaped rings in this style can be found on Renaissance-era paintings from the 16th Century, and they remained popular till the 19th Century.

This variation of the bow ring, made in yellow gold and set with rubies, can be found in both in Italy and Spain, and was made in the 18th through the 19th Century. This example is very similar in make, and with similar hallmarks on similar positions, to a ring in the collection of the British Museum, inventory museum number: AF.2172

GENERAL INFORMATION

Size: the shank is oval and currently wears as a US 8, UK O, Circumference 57 mm
Dimensions front piece: 18 x 14 mm.
This ring could be resized if desired.

Weight: 4.85 grams.

Age: Late 18th Century, circa 1780s.

Material: The back of the shank carries the hallmark 'M', likely the maker's mark, which I was not able to identify. It has been acid tested as being 12k gold, an alloy often used on Sicily.

Condition: In antique condition with wear and repairs, consistent with age. There are several solder repairs on both shoulders and the back of the shank: this can be seen in the pictures.

Because these gemstones are placed in closed settings, I recommend not getting this ring wet when washing your hands or showering.

Please note that the antique box is for display purposes only.
