This 9k gold ring is fitted with a round glass panel, behind which we can see a piece of braided hairwork. This panel is encircled by a royal blue enameled border, studded with tiny rose-cut diamonds, and a halo of seed pearls.
In the 19th century, before the invention of photography and telephones, carrying around a literal piece of a loved one would have had a very significant meaning. Therefore, jewels that contained a piece of hair were very popular. A lot of jewelers specialized in creating designs from hair, and popular ladies' magazines even gave descriptions on how these works of art could be created at home. Based on its design, it is very likely that this ring was not worn as a mourning piece, but as a loving tribute to a friend, family member, or lover.
