These drop earrings are set with two angel skin corals, which have been carved into two 'mano fica' symbols. The cuff of each hand is set with a cabochon-cut coral, and the design is completed by two brilliant-cut diamonds which are set in the top of the ear hooks.
The 'mano fica' symbol is a mildly obscene gesture that uses a thumb wedged in between two fingers to represent the female vulva. The gesture is most commonly used to ward off the evil eye, and has been used since the Roman Empire, where its use spread all over the Mediterranean region. In modern times, it is mostly used in the south of Italy, where the symbol can still be seen widely used to this day.
