Rings with a hidden message on the inside of the shank were worn since Medieval times, and originally often contained a prayer or other message that was worn for good luck and fortune. From the 17th Century onwards, posy rings were created as a token of either romantic love or friendship, and contained messages in Latin, French or English. The use of posy rings fell out of fashion in the end of the 18th Century, when more extensive laws regarding the hallmarking of gold items made it more difficult to inscribe the inside of a ring shank. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe posy inscription inside this ring is noted as being documented from Joan Evans' own personal collection (see Evans, Joan, 'English Posies and Posy Rings', London, 1931, p.90). From this hangs a cross pendant, made up from six round, puffy settings set with table-cut diamonds. Originally, these types of crosses were worn on a long, black velvet ribbon.
