This foldable button hook clearly belonged to a very well-to-do woman! In an era when many buttons and ribbons were used in every outfit, it was quite common to carry a little hook with you which helped fasten buttons (for instance those in a pair of gloves) and garters.
These hooks would most often be made of nonprecious metals, but this particular example, however, is luxuriously made from solid 14k gold, and has a very well-thought-out design. The hook can be folded inwards, making it easily wearable. It also has a notched hinge so that it holds in place, whether folded within itself or extended out, which still works very well after almost 150 years.

Material: Acid tested as 14k gold.
Condition: In great antique condition with only minor wear, consistent with its age. The jump ring was missing when I found it, but I had a matching 14k one in my collection which I have added, making it ready to wear.
