A chatelaine is a decorative clap or ring that suspend a series of chains which would be worn at the waist.
Originating in the Middle Ages, the term initially referred to a belt hook used by the lady of the castle to carry the castle keys.
Over time, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, it evolved into a functional and fashionable accessory, serving as a symbolic and practical precursor to the modern handbag and a personalized "Swiss Army knife" for women.
This silver chatelaine was worn with a hook attached to a girdle and contains several accessories that were practical for everyday use.
From four different chains dangle a perfume bottle, a mechanical pencil, a notepad, and a tiny locket which has a picture compartment on one side, and a mirror on the other. All accessories are decorated with a ribbed pattern.
