This 18k yellow gold brooch is fitted with two compartments: a rectangular-shaped compartment behind a convex glass panel in the top part, and a heart-shaped compartment behind a faceted glass panel in the dangling drop.
The brooch is still stored in its original box, where it has been safely tucked away for nearly 200 years.
Each compartment originally likely contained a piece of hair work, belonging to a loved one. The fact that a heart was used likely tells us that this was a living relative, likely someone who wasn't living close by, but whose presence was felt close whenever the brooch was worn.
Each compartment can still be opened, so you could use it to store a personal memento of your own choosing.
A charming detail is that the tiny heart-shaped drop can be removed, and worn separately as a pendant if desired.
